Originally from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Zane has been a working field geologist for more than 20 years. He has lived in many States and Countries but continued to visit Hawaii and now lives on the Big Island. Zane has a bachelor’s Degree in Geology from University of Idaho and M.S. Studies in Edinburgh, Scotland in Geotechnical Engineering. He has been a volcano tour guide for 4 years and loves the Big Island. When he is not on tour and working at the volcano, he travels on his days off back to the volcano and the rest of the island, learning as much as he can. He is a certified Volcanoes National Park Tour Guide as well as a National Park Service Certified Interpreter (National Park Service Interpretive Development Program). Zane spent years outdoors for work as a geologist and for fun, and continues to this day enjoying the outdoors, especially when lucky enough to be on tour. His strength is his passion and enthusiasm as a tour guide.
Erik grew up in a small town in Idaho and developed a strong passion for the outdoors. During his adventures he developed a strong passion to find a wide variety of minerals. This passion drove him to pursue a degree in Geology which he completed in 1997. Erik spent several years in the mining industry furthering his passion for mineral exploration. He moved on to munitions remediation, traveling the world to help make locations safe for residential and commercial use. Erik decided to move back to the mining industry after meeting up with his old college friend and fellow geologist, Zane Smith, getting back into gold exploration and production. Several years later Zane reached out to Erik for a unique and exciting proposition. They decided to form HawaiiGeoTours to spread their knowledge and passion of geology and love for the islands to anyone that is interested.
